The Janusz Korczak International Youth Meeting 2007
This is a slightly edited version of an announcement sent out by the Janusz Korczak Association
The Janusz Korczak Association in the Netherlands is organising a conference from 22 – 28 September 2007 to celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary. This will be a special conference for people between the ages of 18 and 35 from all over the world who work with children or teenagers professionally or as volunteers.
We will come together in Bergen aan Zee (Holland) to discuss and compare our work, and see how it relates to Korczak's way of working and thinking.
The Janusz Korczak Associations in different countries have their own, specific ways of dealing with the problems of offering support to children and youngsters in threatening situations. This means we must encourage more exchange, study and long-term support. The conference in 2007 will be a stimulus to this end. The workshops will offer these young educators an opportunity to translate models of youth-care/education to the local situation of their own countries.
We propose the following themes:
• Growing up in two cultures; problems versus positive experiences in a multicultural and multiethnic society
• The need for education for citizenship; active participation of children in society.
• Children and multimedia (television, internet, video-games, mobile telephone); risks and opportunities; influence of consumer society.
• The rights of children and youngsters with regard to sexuality.
• "Learning for life". How can children be active in their own learning processes?
• Integration of disabled and chronically ill children into society
• The right of children to mental and physical protection. (Or: Our fight against the mental and physical abuse of children)
• How can we help children and young people to deal with aggression?
The participants can take part in:
— Workshops/Training sessions
— 'Open podia'; participants present activities in the fields of youth care and education in their own country.
— Exchange and discussion
— Lectures
— Roundtables
— Cultural visits
— Music and theatre performances
Participants: Educators, students, social workers etc. (Aged 18 to 35). Older people welcome but bring some young colleagues with you.

Date: September Saturday 22th - Friday 28th 2007
Place: "Het Zeehuis", Bergen aan Zee, Holland. This place is on the edge of a big forest and only 300 metres from the North Sea.
Cost: € 225. (This includes overnight stays, meals and cultural visits. It does not include travel costs)
