The Baumgarten Children’s Home: Translation errors

We apologise for some errors in the article on the Baumgarten children’s home posted on this site in September and are grateful to Robert Hamm for pointing them out.

Page 5, line 25: This is the worst mistake of all. “Admittedly we went against the basic principle” etc. should read “Of course we upheld the basic principle” etc.

Page 7, line 29: Not “The old pedagogy would have shuddered to hear that I allowed children to go to the cinema and would have reproached me bitterly,” but “The old pedagogy had shuddered to hear that I allowed children to go to the cinema and had reproached me bitterly,”

Page 8, lines 11 and 12: The translation requires too much of the teacher. The sentence should read: “And the first positive condition for that is that he must, quite simply, love some of the children, and be generally sufficiently aware” etc.

Page 10, line 31: “They are always wasting time talking,” should read, “They are always talking rubbish.”

Page 11, line 16: The emphasis needs to be changed. A better version would be: “Yet they believed us, and above all the school community which was developing meanwhile, enough to be friendly towards us in the end.”

Page 11, line 30 ff: In the following sentence the words “only seldom” were attached to the wrong clause. It should read: “On top of that the children, since they had found out that we never punished them for the tone which they adopted towards us, spoke to us ‘cheekily’ and ‘cockily’, as the old pedagogy terms it, but at any rate they only seldom behaved unkindly and rudely.”

Page 12, line 18: This is another bad misunderstanding. What it should say is, “Of course this behaviour on the part of the children stopped completely – we had never seriously doubted that it would.”
